Mwine Mpaka, met with legislators and members of the Uganda Sugar Manufacturers Association (USMA) to discuss the 2023 Sugar Amendment Bill proposals. The committee meeting was attended by additional USMA representatives from Kinyara Sugar Limited, Kakira Sugar Limited and SCOUL as well as 15 members of parliament representing Uganda's sugarcane-growing regions.

Parliamentary Trade Committee discusses Sugar bill

In summary it was theorized that, “Uganda, East Africa's first surplus sugar producer, should cease developing additional plants and instead focus on legally binding contracts between growers and millers. The sugar sector contributes significantly to Uganda's economy through taxes, investment, and development. To be competitive, Uganda should not raise the sugar formula %. Additionally, sugar mill licensing should be suspended until a council is formed,” The team proposed.

Kinyara Fraternity Donates blood

Kinyara Sugar Limited (KSL) and Uganda Blood Transfusion Services (UBTS) held a blood donation campaign in Masindi area in January 2024, and we discovered that 225 pints of blood were donated. The campaign was launched because of a severe blood scarcity in the area. The campaign kicked off at 11:00 a.m., with KSL and UBTS health specialists taking centre stage.

Local officials and politicians attended the event, which was preceded by radio talk shows on Kings FM and Bunyoro Broadcasting Services. Public drives were held on the days preceding the drives. The drives were attended by approximately 410 persons, some of whom were in poor health and others who were unqualified. Visitors get a soft drink and lunch.

We want to continue blood donation campaigns during the holidays, collaborate with KSL to strengthen their image through blood donations, and procure blood donation cards through the Human Resources department's medical section.

Masindi district security committee moves to stop carrying sugarcane on light vehicles

The Masindi District security committee proposed a ban on the transportation of sugarcane using light vehicles and motorcycles, effective January 1, 2024.

It is our collective effort to support the move in order to remain competitive and productive in the sugar manufacturing sector in Uganda, but also to protect our families and communities from unnecessary theft and losses from our plantations in Masindi district.

The move is aimed at combating rising cases of sugarcane theft in the district.
Masindi District Security Committee said the ban is in response to the discovery of rampant sugarcane theft, with criminals selling stolen sugarcane in kilograms to unauthorized middlemen, who also sell it at inflated prices to various factories.

Mr. Emmy Ngabirano, the Masindi Resident District Commissioner, said the ease of transporting sugarcane in smaller vehicles had facilitated widespread theft from farmers' fields, forcing a strict response from security to curb the vice.

Sugarcane may be used to power future cars

Sugarcane can be genetically engineered to produce oil in its leaves and stems for biodiesel production, scientists have found.

The modified sugarcane plants also produce more sugar, which are used for ethanol production, researchers said.

The dual-purpose bioenergy crops are predicted to be more than five times more profitable per acre than soybeans and two times more profitable than corn, they said.

Using a juicer, researchers led by the University of Illinois in the US extracted about 90 per cent of the sugar and 60 per cent of the oil from the plant.

The juice was fermented to produce ethanol and later treated with organic solvents to recover the oil. The team has patented the method used to separate the oil and sugar.
